SOFIA NATIONAL OPERA

Sofia National Opera, founded in 1890, is the oldest and most prestigious Bulgarian opera theatre. Drawing upon the tradition of West European and Russian ballet theatre, its founders and opera makers - singers and production managers, have established the ensemble method of a permanent troupe (soloist, orchestra musicians, ballet dancers, set design artists and producers). The latter produce up to ten premieres of classical and modern opera and ballet for a ten-month-season. There are many singers, conductors and directors who have contributed the the professional achievements of the Sofia National Opera. Some of the stars of world opera, such as Nicolaj Ghiaurov, Ghena Dimitrova, Nicola Ghiuselev, Anna Tomowa-Sintow have made the first steps of their artistic careers on the Sofia stage. Preserving the established traditions, the current directorship of the National Opera further develops various artistic strategies - both profound and bravely innovative - that aim at long-term initiatives. It has introduced new artistic tendencies in the activities of the theatre by staging works that are not familiar to the Bulgarian audience and also by launching co-productions with foreign partners. As early as the 1940s troupe of the National Opera was guest-visitor in Germany whereas ever since the 1950s the Opera Theatre has had performances in all European countries, in some countries in Africa, South America and Asia - including 60 classical and modern opera and ballet productions, as well as special concert programs. The Opera is co-organizer and host of the International Competition for Young Opera Singers Boris Hristov which was held in Sofia for the sixteenth time in year 2000. The Sofia National Opera made various CD recordings for different labels - among them Mega Music, SONY, Naxos, MMO under the direction of conductors like Emil Tchakarov, Nayden Todorov, Boris Hinchev, Ivan Marinov and Rouslan Raychev.
